I have been catching some flak over my writing of a blog about sled dogs and the Iditarod. I am on the dogs side. The issue many have brought up is why am I worried about one dog, and a few dogs in general, while thousands of babies die each day due to abortion.
Well, we do the abortion thing to ourselves. We are capable of a higher form of thinking as humans. Notice, I said we are "capable" of that kind of thinking. I don't think we actually do it. But issues such as abortion are things we, as humans, have done to ourselves.
We have to take care of our little animals. They have very limited abilities to think for themselves, although they do a wonderful job of it. It is or responsibility to take care of the little animal's. You just can't run one to death. That's wrong.
So don't confuse the issues. I am not here advocating for or against abortion. I am just saying those decisions are left to humans and we should have enough sense to do what is right. Well, you would think that until you read where we have the ability to run a dog to death!
One other thing is for sure also. You will never see a cat pulling a sled!!

Side note on sled dogs
I spent a while living above the Arctic Circle and I got to witness sled dogs at work, even got to ride a sled once. But the dogs that do get to run in their owner's sleds are usually better off than the ones left tied to a short chain, hooked to a cold doghouse, day after night.
And if you consider the ones put to death as puppies - because their legs are too short or there are too many in the litter to allow for better survival of chosen ones - better off still.
It is sad to see dogs die. But the dogs also strive for a chance to run. It is their desire. Also, for many people in the colder regions, running a team is a way of life - not just a once a year race.
