Since the democrats have been in their new position of majority in Congress, they have been primarily focused on only one thing. Even though they have shown themselves to be ineffective and weak, the defeat and surrender of the U.S. military is the prize that keeps them moving forward.
Now that success in Iraq is more readily apparent, the democrats are even more desperate to lose Dingy Harry's "lost war." Besides, Nancy Pelosi says she is plenty tired of the anti-war crowd hanging out in her yard.
The new democrat strategy is simple: If they cannot shake President George W. Bush (and they haven't), then they will go after an ally of the U.S. The House Foreign Affairs committee has looked back 92 years and decided that we need a congressional resolution to declare the killing of Armenians by the Ottoman Turks in 1915 a case of genocide. This committee, and a yet undetermined number of members of the House of Representatives are arrogant enough to think they can re-write another country's history and then tell them what they need to do about it now. Even more amazing is that those belonging to the "pro-death - we think abortion is a right, even partial birth abortion" crowd could accuse anyone of genocide.
Allow me a bi-partisan moment: is this what you expect your Congressmen to be doing? What is the value of this exercise? Are there no current issues facing our country that need their attention?
Turkey has been a strong ally of the U.S. in this war on terror. About 60% and maybe more of the supplies for our troops come into the region through Turkey and it's airspace. This accusation of genocide is quite offensive to them and they have made that known.
When asked why this resolution is now being proposed, the answer was that there is no good time for this. I see two driving factors behind this. First, this is obviously an easy way to irritate Turkey and potentially hinder the war effort. Secondly, this is about appeasing the strong lobby of the Armenians and thereby gaining back the Armenian vote for the 2008 election.
Neither of these goals justifies the action and both seem to be standard practice for the democrats. Once this issue is settled, the democrats can get on to their next display of foolishness.
