Managing Your Clients

I've landed another blogging gig, as an occasional contributor to Michael Stelzner's Writing White Papers. My first post is on ending client relationships when they've gone bad. This is something that many freelancers have to face.

Congrats on the new gig

Great article, too. If freelancers look at their writing as a business rather than a hobby, they can better face the fact that some clients aren't good enough to keep.

TF

analyse that

It's always good to do a cost-benefit analysis, TF (not the kind of language I usually use, but it's a good concept for any business).

Bad Clients

I've had to face this more than once, in freelancing, and other areas of my business. It is very difficult managing emotionally abusive people. Whether these people are trying to get something for nothing, or they just enjoy making other people feel miserable.

I know a few of these people personally. They really believe they are justified in pushing people 'to get their best' or 'to get their moneys worth' - there are all sorts of excuses. But then, of course, we all know that abusive spouses are the same...they actually believe they have a right to act that way.

That is why you need a hard hand when dealing with abusive clients. They don't get it, and will keep forcing you to give them more and more. But, in the end, they will leave anyway because you are not playing the 'game' right.

The most important thing to remember is that it is not a personal reflection on you as a writer or a person. Do not let these people make you feel like an amateur or that you are not good enough.

Never let another person define who you are. You will live longer and happier.
