Barack Obama trounced Hillary Clinton, and John Edwards, Saturday in the South Carolina primary. He got more votes than those two combined, 55%. He got 4 out of 5 black votes that were cast in the state and many were cast. In the run up to the contest the race card was played by Obama and Clinton, especially by Hillary's husband, former president Slick Willie Clinton. The party that prides itself in making everyone inclusive has somehow lost its way.
I think it is a stroke of political genius by Bill Clinton to interject race into the mix. With the large minority populations in the south, Obama will do wonderful. He will be the black candidate. How will that play out in states outside the South? In the general election the South will vote solidly Republican and everyone knows that so Obama's strength will be negated. I think the Clinton's will make this a big issue leading up to the convention.
I just find it is funny how the race card is being played big time in the Democratic primary. They want us to think they are not like that!!
Another note is that John Edwards is sticking around. He will be the kingmaker in the deal. Hillary or Obama probably won't garner enough delegates if Edwards stays in the race to siphon off delegates from those two. At the convention if neither Hillary or Obama has a majority Edwards will be able to name his price. And I can bet it will be a heavy one!

I agree -
I really do not think Edwards will win the dem nomination, but you have to ask the question - where will his followers cast their vote?
The race issue is significant - the South Carolina results make that clear. Typical politicians will use anything to get a vote. This will be one election where a "racist" should feel right at home.
Keep up the clear thinking!

Maybe Edwards will encourage his backers to vote for whichever
candidate will promise to ask him to be their running mate.

Edwards is toast...
Hillary or Obama in the White House? The Kennedy support - positive or negative? But will Americans vote for Obama as president? Would he be better to come through the system as a vice president and President in 2012? Just the thought of a Kiwi.

I saw some analyst, cajunrooster
who suggested that Edwards really wants to be attorney general rather that vp. I don't know if that is true, but I agree with you that he is only in the race to have a say in the end which of the other two are nominated.
__________________________Twenty five percent of whites voted for Obabma in SC, but is that enough to put him ahead in NY and California and others on Super Tuesday. I have said before, what I don't know about Obama scares me, but what I know of Hillary scares me more.

Yes sir, the "racist" has been brought to the fore. And for all the talking the Democrats do about it, you never hear a peep from the GOP about it. Everyone needs to think about that.
Chronic,
I am with Family in that Edwards wants to be Attorney General and no matter who wins the nomination he will throw his support behind who promises him the most.
Hut,
No matter what people say, when it comes time to pull the lever............well, we will see. I think the Democrats will use the race issue so much by the time the election comes along that people will get tired of hearing about it. It's not that people won't vote for a black man, I just think they won't vote at all in many cases.
You are right that many people won't vote at all, Cajun.
And not just because they don't want to vote for a woman OR a black man. It is more likely that they just don't care. (Technically, Obama could just as well be called a white man since his mother is white.)

And thus
the earlier question raised by different people - Is Obama black enough? I bet I could find more than a handful of Republicans and Democrats who would be willing to turn over their cards and ask for a re-deal!

Chronic,
With Obama it's kind of like the Tiger Woods thing. He's really mixed, but when he does great he's black. They need some good heroes. Many people won't vote. They truly don't care.
