Bad Ideas

on how to alleviate America's Energy Dilemma seem to POP out of thin air. Actually, there is a workshop in far-off New York City where an Economic Elf named Thomas Friedman, columnist for The New York Times (his column of August 11 If Only the U.S. could be as flush with energy as Denmark is where the quotations in the article were originally printed.)

The high price for gasoline was $4.11 on July 17, 2008; of course, Californians pay fifty cents a gallon more for "Summer Blend Gasoline" specially formulated to not create smog, yet California drivers have to pay for Smog Check Too Much! imposed by the legislators to re-register their cars and trucks. (Plus the License fee also.)

Thomas Friedman is an excellent writer who has several hundred thousand daily readers of his euphoniously titled column  in The New York Times. He has written several books as he is the head cheerleader for Globalization and Free Trade Agreements in the American media establishment. His books are very readable, and chock full of his bad ideas, that will negatively affect your life! One of his books is The World is Flat- A Brief History of the Twenty-First History. 2005

As a writer for the New York Times Thomas Friedman get to fly all over the world in his search for bad ideas to import to the United States.

He is very highly paid and has a generous expense account that covers his hotel, meals, Internet connection (to file stories) and cellphone.

The Danes, he writes "...imposed on themselves a set of gasoline taxes, CO2 taxes (this is where the Cap and Trade scheme the US Senate wants to impose on Americans originated!) and building and appliance efficiency standards that allowed them to grow their economy - while barely growing their energy consumption- and gave birth to a Danish clean power industry that is one of the most competitive in the world today...There is little whining here about $10.00-a-gallon gasoline because of high energy taxes."

We support many of his ideas about energy generation; "Denmark today gets nearly 20 percent of it's electricity from wind. America? About 1 percent." What we object to is the increased taxes the ideas about "Carbon Markets"  will impose on Americans already struggling to pay for gas to get work and school.

City, county, state and Federal politicians read Thomas Friedman's columns and adopt his ideas and attend seminars where they exchange ideas on how to impose new regulations on...US!

Denmark's Prime Minister was interviewed by Thomas Friedman; "I have observed that in all other countries , including in America , people are complaining about how prices of gasoline are going up. The cure is not to reduce the price, but, on the contrary, to raise it even higher to break our addiction to oil. we are going to introduce a new tax reform in the direction of even higher taxation on energy..."

When you read your local newspaper,  USA Today, Time and Business week magazines you will now notice how these ideas are spread with the goal of stimulating the renewable energy industry and alternative energy industries. We are all for that (Click Steve Lee's Blog at the top of the page to read more articles) but are against increasing the tax burden on Americans that need to drive family-sized cars or need trucks or SUV's for work.
