Books: Four summer thrillers from four hot authors

New books from Clive Cussler, Robert B. Parker, W. E. B. Griffin, and Catherine Coulter will be arriving on bookstore shelves in June.

On June 3, Clive Cusler brings his knowledge of ships to another story about the covert ship "Oregon" in Plague Ship from Putnam. Winding down from a Persian Gulf mission, the crew comes across a ship adrift with hundreds of bodies on its decks. This doesn't bode well for anyone other than readers of high-stakes sea stories.

On the same day, Putnam is releasing Robert B. Parker's Resolution and W. E. B. Griffin's Death Manor. Parker, whom the Boston Globe calls "a force of nature" and whom many view as the dean of American crime fiction, is once again writing about hard-boiled private eye Spencer in Resolution. Anyone living in an old-West town where the dust never settles isn't looking for springtime and rainbows and Parker doesn't deliver any.

Griffin's Honor-Bound story Death and Honor takes us into Argentina in 1943 for more World War II espionage. This is the fourth book in a popular series.

The publisher's blurb for Catherine Coulter's TailSpin begins with an ominous note: "FBI Special Agent Jackson Crowne is flying his Cessna over the Appalachians, with a very important passenger: renowned psychiatrist Dr. Timothy MacLean; their destination is Washington, D.C. Upon their arrival, the FBI will protect the doctor—and ascertain just who wants him dead. But they don't make it." and then promises plenty of secrets, mayhem and murder. The release date is June 24.

In light of the on-going saga at Amazon as it seeks to use its size and branding to corner the book market, this comment in a Publisher's Weekly story is interesting: “With Amazon's growing power in book sales, it's understandable that publishers may be a bit anxious on learning that in Amazon's 10-k filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company lists among its many competitors not just bookstores but also publishers.”

nothing new

but new to me and/or my son...we got his assigned reading list for summer. he is going to read To Kill a Mockingbird, Salt: A World History and another choice, none of which I'd heard of or read, but am going to look at The Crystal Cave. I think the salt one sounds very interesting and I think he thinks so too. He brought up last night if gasoline (oil) is/will become the new salt...

I liked the Crystal Cave, Silken

Mockingbird, of course. No surprise, though, that none of the authors I mentioned in this post were on the list!

that's good to know

I think it is the one that he would be most interested in, just judging by the blurbs of the choices listed. but if I remember right , from what I saw, it is a pretty long one too. that would be two very long books (crystal cave and salt) to get through. he can do it, and with ease if he remains interested. the other choices, though, I thought sounded a bit....not so interesting or perhaps even age inappropriate....
